YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio –
Nurses who work at Northside Hospital in Youngstown have reached an agreement with Valley Care Health System.
A large majority of the Youngstown General Duty Nurses Association voted Friday in favor of the new three year contract, according to YGDNA President Eric Williams.
The 280 members have been working under a contract extensions since their old labor agreement expired in February,
According to Williams, the new agreement includes a 2% pay increase each year of the contract. However, members will be asked to pay more out of pocket towards healthcare.
“We wanted a three year agreement the last time. We were unable to achieve that, we see that as a commitment to the community and nurses by having a three year agreement,” said Williams.
In June, YGDNA members filed grievances demanding an end to mandatory overtime, expressing concern for patient care. Williams says the issue has gone before an arbitrator. They expect a decision in about a month.
In 2001 Northside nurses went on strike for 81 days in a contract dispute over staffing levels and forced overtime.
